Progression of Technology

Isn't technology scary? I'm posting this from my brand new DSi. A Gameboy. It has two cameras, a touch screen, a microphone, and Wi-Fi. Seven years ago I got a Gameboy Color and thought that was advanced. It had color games and almost fit in your pocket. If our technological knowledge expands exponentially as it has been, what do you think the effects on the human race will be? Will we grow fat and lazy until we die of self neglect? Will the computers take over the world? What kinds of technologies do you think we'll have ten years from now?

Computers will never take over the world. The Matrix, among hundreds, possibly thousands, of other movies and TV shows depicting a robot apocalypse has scared the hell out of everyone.

David,
Artificial intelligence is possible. It will be in the next 200 years or so. If programmed correctly, they will be able to learn. At first they will be like children, but they will learn and could eventually be smarter and more capable of tasks than actual humans.
However, we cannot start thinking of those "scary movies". Those are all science fiction and shouldn't be taken seriously. Sure, it would be cool if the Matrix existed (kind of) but it doesn't and probably won't . . .
In ten years, I think we will continue to make things smaller and smaller and more portable. Since memory and hard drives are becoming cheaper, the prices of computers will go own. However, the economy, if it goes really bad, will have a profound impact on this guess.
Kate, I don't think we will grow lazy and eventually kill ourselves because of it. I think we will do something epicly stupid and destroy the race. Sad, but "people are stupid".

Yes, anything is possible, but it's not very likely to happen anytime soon. I also never said anything about it not being possible.
People aren't stupid so much as arrogant and selfish to the point of stupidity.

I don't really know that much about programming and such. I am up to date with how to use most technology. But I'm in no way a pro or anything. But a buddy of mine told me that there was a computer programmed to try different problem solving for one problem, and once the problem was solved using one way, the computer saved the way it solved the problem and moved on to another problem. The whole process repeated. My friend said that eventually if that could be put to use for medical purposes a cure for cancer would be able to be discovered, among other cures. It's far fetched but eventually I believe it can happen.

Nic,
If an algorithm is developed that allows a computer to learn by going through problem-solving and finding similarities between past problems, it will develop like a child and slowly learn how to live. Whether this is put towards cancer research or not, that is basically how it would happen.Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning? -- George W. Bush -

JD, i agree humans probably will all die out because of some stupid mistake, but what if that mistake is technology?
Though i think technology may be destroying some of the values in the world. I don't think that artificial intelligence is going to happen, it will cause so much controversy in the world it will never reach large scale, but if it does maybe that is the stupid mistake we make.
